Agent Orange genetics: parents, labels and family tree

Agent Orange is a cross of Orange Velvet, an orange-cream hybrid descended from Skunk #1, and Jack the Ripper, a lemon sativa from the same breeders, made by MzJill at TGA Genetics.1,2,3,4 Some sources write the same cross one generation back, as Orange Skunk × Jack’s Cleaner × Space Queen, and the indica-or-sativa label depends on who you ask.5,6,7

The two parents

Orange Velvet is the mother. Leafly lists it as a hybrid created by MzJill Genetics with Skunk #1 as its parent and Agent Orange and Jillybean as its children; it “tastes and smells remarkably like Orange Dreamsicles”, its effects are “not super powerful”, and it “has been discontinued for the most part”.2 MzJill credits it with Agent Orange’s “Dreamsicle smooth finish”, and it was among the strains whose rights went to her in 2019.4,12

Jack the Ripper is the father: a sativa by Subcool’s The Dank (TGA), Jack’s Cleaner × Space Queen, developed as a seed version of Jack’s Cleaner, with “incredibly resinous, triangle-shaped buds and an intense spicy, lemon-pine aroma”.3 SeedFinder lists it as 80% sativa with 8–10 weeks of flowering, and High Times chose it as one of its Top 10 strains of 2006.12,13 MzJill credits it with Agent Orange’s “sour, bright, freshly squeezed lemon notes”.4

One cross, written two ways

Sources agree on the genetics but not on how to write them.

Why both are right

They agree once you go back a generation: Leafly lists Jack the Ripper as Jack’s Cleaner × Space Queen, and Skunk #1 as Orange Velvet’s only listed parent, while SeedFinder’s genealogy gives Orange Velvet as Skunk × unknown.2,3,7 Further back, Leafly lists Jack’s Cleaner as Jack Herer × The Cleaner and Space Queen as Romulan × Cinderella 99, which puts Jack Herer on one side of Agent Orange’s tree and Cinderella 99 on the other.18,19

Indica or sativa? What each source says

Every source calls it a hybrid; the lean is where they part.

The parents explain the spread: Jack the Ripper is a sativa on Leafly, while Orange Velvet is a Skunk-descended hybrid whose effects Leafly calls “not super powerful”.2,3

Seed versions and clones

The original TGA release was regular seed: SeedFinder says MzJill Genetics’ Agent Orange was never available as feminized seed.7 MzJill Genetics now sells Agent Orange F2 and Agent Orange S1 (feminized), both listed as Orange Velvet × Jack the Ripper and both described as tall plants with resinous, spear-shaped colas and foliage that can turn burgundy to almost black.1,14 Philosopher Seeds sells a regular-seed Agent Orange it calls the F2 version of TGA Subcool’s strain, and Weedmaps says Philosopher Seeds later released an F2 generation.15,16

Clones have circulated too: Oregon Genetics Cannabis listed one in a 2017 catalogue.17 The TGA-era description notes two phenotypes, one short and thick and one taller and more resinous, which Weedmaps repeats as MzJill’s description.7,15 Lab results are matched by name, so the 140 tests behind this guide cannot tell the versions apart.20

Jilly Bean, the half-sibling

Jilly Bean (Jillybean) shares Agent Orange’s mother: Leafly lists it as Orange Velvet × Space Queen, so the two have Orange Velvet in common and Space Queen one generation apart.3,21 MzJill calls Jilly Bean her first and most celebrated strain, with a High Times Top Ten in 2007 and High Times Best Sativa in 2014; Leafly users give it 1,022 ratings and the same orange and citrus flavors, with mango.4,21 Weedmaps lists Jilly Bean among strains similar to Agent Orange.15
